Visiting an Inmate at Essex County Jail

The jail offers window visits only. Contact visits are not permitted unless approved after sentencing.

  • Only individuals on the inmate’s Approved Visitor List may visit.
  • One window visit per day.
  • No more than two visits per week from the same person.
  • Visits last up to 32 minutes and may be shortened by staff.
  • Visitors are subject to frisk search and metal detector screening.
  • Visits are not permitted for inmates in disciplinary detention or medical/psychiatric observation.

Monday – Friday: 7:30 AM – 9:00 PM
Saturday – Sunday: 7:30 AM – 2:30 PM

Phone Calls

Inmates use Securus Technologies for phone services.

  • Inmates can make collect calls.
  • Inmates cannot receive incoming calls.
  • Friends and family can deposit funds through JPay for prepaid calls.
  • All calls are monitored.

Depositing Money

Money orders must be sent through JPay. NJ DOC facilities no longer accept money orders directly.

Steps:

  1. Complete a JPay deposit form at www.jpay.com/moneyorder
  2. Include the inmate’s ID number

You may also deposit money at the jail lobby kiosk.
Funds allow inmates to purchase commissary items, make phone calls, and have money upon release.

Mail Rules

  • All mail must be sent through the U.S. Postal Service.
  • No packages are allowed.
  • All mail is opened and inspected.
  • Inmates cannot receive mail from individuals on the prohibited list.
  • Obscene or sexually explicit materials are prohibited.
